Love for our new Lager
Jul 24, 2024
“We wanted to have a Lager in our range that satisfies the thirst quenching taste buds, is easy drinking and timeless. Lagers have been a staple for beer drinkers for such a long time and one of the most consumed styles across the world so it was in our best interest to brew the crisp nectar.”
So what are the technical points in brewing a damn fine Lager?
We've broken it down for you.
Malt- Starting with the use of Pilsner or other light malts to achieve a clean, light coloured beer is essential
Hops- Using traditional lager hops to ensure mild bitterness and subtle aromas in this refreshing number is the next step, we have used a sprinkling of noble hop Saaz, along with Magnum and Tetra Hop.
Yeast- To round out this clean, crisp number we need a Lager yeast strain to ensure things can ferment in the lower temperatures.
Water- The main ingredient! Filtered and locally sourced, with a sprinkling of brewing salts to achieve the perfect composition for our lager.
Mashing, Lautering, Boiling, Whirlpooling.
Fermentation conducted at lower temperatures to ensure clean fermentation and minimise the production of esters and phenols.
What's that? It's when we raise the temperature back up again for a few days to allow the yeast to reabsorb diacetyl- which is a bi-product of fermentation that can give the beer a buttery flavour if left unchecked.
An important maturation step, the beer is cold conditioned at low temperatures for a much longer period than other styles. This works to clarify the beer and help develop the clean, crisp profile.
This step clarifies and polishes the beer for that beautiful "bright" look you expect from a good Lager. (Unlike more traditional filters it's also great for keeping wanted aromatics and flavours in the beer.)
We move the lager into Bright tanks for the finale, where we carbonate before it's packaged ready for your enjoyment!
