Hay Shed Dark Lager: A Limited Release Showcasing Experimental NZ Hops - Beerfarm

Hay Shed Dark Lager: A Limited Release Showcasing Experimental NZ Hops

Introducing the Hay Shed Dark Lager, brewed in collaboration with the South West Brewers Alliance.

Just in time for the cooler months, this smooth, malt-forward dark lager is layered with bright aromatics from experimental New Zealand hops.

At the heart of this brew is NZH-109, an experimental hop variety sourced through the NZ Hops Bract Programme. These trial hops are not widely available, making this release a rare opportunity to experience new hop genetics before they reach the mainstream. NZH-109 contributes vibrant flashes of tropical fruit and citrus, along with soft layers of floral, herbal, and stonefruit character.

While the hops bring brightness, the foundation of this beer is firmly rooted in its malt profile. Brewed with Coopers Pilsner Malt alongside a carefully selected mix from AMSAT and Briess, the Hay Shed Dark Lager delivers depth without heaviness.

The interplay between dark malt richness, gentle biscuit sweetness, and lively New Zealand hop aromatics creates an unassuming dark lager that’s clean, balanced, and quietly moreish.

One for curious craft drinkers: If you love discovering something new, this beer offers a rare glimpse into the future of hops. NZH-109 is still in trial, making this a genuinely limited tasting experience. If you enjoy darker styles but want something lighter, cleaner, and more aromatic, this one's for you.

Brewed in collaboration with the South West Brewers Alliance, a non-for-profit organisation formed by 10 South West based breweries. Together, we're collaborating for the growth and mutual benefits of the brewing industry in our region.

The Hay Shed Dark Lager is only around for a short time on tap at the farm, SWBA Breweries, and a select few other venues.
